Gustavo Varela

Gustavo Varela is a 20 years old Portuguese under-20 international who stands at 1.84m tall. He also demonstrates good support play, being able to hold and protect the ball due to his good physical build.

Right-footed, athletic, fast and physically strong striker, presenting an interesting profile. He demonstrates a good relationship with the ball, is good at dribbling and has a good first touch that allows him to anticipate the opponent in the play. He stands out mainly for his actions in the final third, he reveals a good positional sense in the finishing zones which means he is always in the right place to combine with his good finishing, having a killer instinct finishing in any way whether on the ground or in the air, as he also shows quality in the aerial game. A striker who is capable of acting as a pivot, that is, of getting down to receive the play and protecting and holding the ball well before seeking out the moves of his teammates. This is due to the fact that he demonstrates a good game with his back to the goal and due to his physical build he is able to withstand the loads and physical duels. He also shows skill in his movements, particularly in his search for depth where he can find empty spaces to drive vertically towards the goal to finish. Defensively, he is aggressive in pressing and anticipates opponents well. Athlete who has vision of the game, is determined and focused. Its weak point is that sometimes it doesn't give much attention to the game and so it stays away from the game, being absent from it. Player with potential who already debuted last season for the Reds' first team, but in the current season he didn't have that opportunity. He achieved great numbers in this Youth League, with 7 goals in 7 games showing his goalscoring streak. In the near future I see him having more minutes in the first team and showing that his ability to score goals can be very useful in Benfica's first team.
